Preparing the Surface :: Prior to painting or faux finishing, make sure that the surface is clean of any contaminants such as grease, wax, dirt or any other material that would affect the adherence of paint to the surface. If peeling paint, holes or cracks exist on the surface, they should be repaired with spackle. Primer should then be applied on all patches. If wallpaper has been removed, make sure that any paste residue is entirely cleaned from the surface. Follow by applying a coat of primer to the surface. New dry wall or plaster should have a coat of primer applied to seal the surface.
Preparing the Room :: Apply high quality 2" beige masking tape to protect areas such as woodwork, ceiling, and any other areas that directly connect to the painting surface. You should do a test area prior to the application of the masking tape to ensure that it does not affect the areas that it is applied to. We do not recommend the use of low adhesion or blue tape for this application unless it is necessary. Low adhesion masking tape can allow the paint to "seep" under the edges more easily than high adhesion tape.

Wood GrainingTip :: The Wood Graining technique works best on surfaces that would likely be made out of wood; such as baseboards, moldings, columns, and table tops. But, don't be afraid to try this technique on a wall. Try colors other than brown and you will be amazed by the type of results you get. Work in approximately a 3' x 3' area so that the glaze doesn't dry too quickly.
Cleaning the Tools :: Rinse the wood graining tool under warm water until all the glaze has been removed.
